Perhaps one of the oddest items in the numismatic universe, a Roosevelt Dime struck on a zinc nail will be auctioned in January. Whether the error was accidental or deliberate is a matter of debate. The Dallas-based auction house, Heritage Auctions, has announced that the error piece will be up for sale on January 6th in Tampa, Florida, and is estimated to fetch $10,000. The online bidding has already begun for the dime.

While most errors are caught by the mint, some slip through into circulation. Such error coins turn into highly sought collectors’ items.
